In April 2007, Layfield was approached by a prominent BC-based engineering firm to supply a silt & sediment containment system for a mining project in the Northwest Territories. The client, a world leader in engineering, procurement, and construction services, is also a mainstay in BC mining operations.

As part of an overall project to expand this particular mine, this engineering firm was tasked with creating the infrastructure required to fully operate this mine. Aspects of the project included crushing, milling, and leaching facilities for an 800 tonnes /day capacity as well as all surface infrastructure including barge & marine facilities, service roads, and electricity for this remote location in the Northwest Territories.

In order to protect local marine ecosystems, the client required the use of highly effective Turbidity Barriers to encapsulate the construction of the jetty and other marine facilities, thus preventing silts and other natural pollutants from escaping the area.  Due to the intense construction activities, local tide action, and currents in the area, a high level of turbidity was anticipated.

The project called for a complete barrier system to be installed around the jetty in a rectangular pattern. This design meant that the barriers would extend a significant distance into the bay.

The Engineer contacted Layfield Geosynthetics to explore options for the supply of these barriers. Among the concerns were delivery, survivability and installation. Layfield was able to supply its Type 3.DOT (HD) barriers in varying lengths & depths, with custom detailing such as a heavier gauge material, a larger floatation, a cable support and a ballast chain to ensure the system performed as designed with the effects of tidal action and water currents.  The system included 40 anchor kits to hold the barriers in place. Layfield was able to provide delivery of the custom barriers and anchor kits in time to meet the fast tracked schedule.  Layfield also provided after sale technical support with installation and maintenance guidelines.

Layfield’s commitment to providing solutions and ongoing support to the customer was instrumental in the success of this portion of the project. As a result, the barriers were easily installed and performed as designed, thereby exceeding the expectations of the Engineering firm and project owner.
