Rainwater is the primary source of water available to us. Naturally, some of the rainwater soaks directly into the soil which makes up the ground water inside the surface of earth. Rainwater which is not soaked up by the soil flows over the surface of earth and is known as surface run-off water. In absence of any receiving channel, this run-off ultimately flows into the rivers, streams or oceans. Managing this run-off water optimally, so that the collected water can be put to further usage is known as stormwater management.
All the traditional ways of managing stormwater are known as above-ground stormwater management systems. The traditional ways of detaining and retaining water demands storing water in open ponds/sewers. This system simply drains high peak flows away. This system dislocates high water loads to be put in at some other place.
In these systems, it is essential that you use proper filtration techniques and materials to make sure the quality of the water doesn’t suffer from polluted stormwater inflows.
If your goal is to reduce flooding due to stormwater runoff being too high though, there are different solutions available. All it requires is a bit of out-of-the-box thinking.
