Position Description

Position Overview

The Business Development Manager (BDM) Construction is responsible for increasing the demand for Layfield’s geosynthetics and environmental containment products and services within an assigned region. This position liaises closely with key divisional staff including customer service, sales, administration, and operations.

Key Responsibilities

Develop Markets for Assigned Product Lines:

  • Technical promotion for Layfield products and services to engineers, owners, contractors, and distributors primarily involved in civil, Industrial, mining, and oil and gas to maximize the number of specifications set and held for Layfield specialty products and services.
  • In-depth technical knowledge relating to the services or products in the construction division.
  • Ensure all customers are kept up to date with current company products and services.
  • Maintain familiarity with industry products to learn potential for Layfield products.
  • Develop an understanding of the needs of individuals responsible for setting specifications within the targeted sectors and geographies.
  • Elevate Layfield’s profile within the engineering community through participation in industry associations and events including presentations of technical papers at trade conferences.
  • Work Closely with the sales team to develop and deliver technical solutions to our customers.

Developing New Customers and New Markets:

  • Provide persistent client prospecting, project tracking, and lead generation for targeted segments and geographies.
  • Create technical content and images that can be used to develop more effective marketing messages, including case studies, project profiles, and digital-media-sized project summaries.
  • Provide aggressive client prospecting, project tracking, lead generation for segment.
  • Work closely with the sales team to develop and deliver technical solutions to our customers.
  • Travel within the assigned territory to train and support Sales Group and customers.
  • Develop systematic methods of finding own prospect leads and make follow up calls in line with established policies.
  • Forward suggestions for possible new products to Engineering Group Business Manager.

Work Relationships:

  • Represent the company and customers in a professional and ethical manner at all times.
  • Keep the Engineering Group Business Manager apprised of activities. Use account activity reports as necessary.
  • Develop customer confidence and goodwill.
  • May train and at times direct the activities of Layfield representatives but has no direct supervisory responsibility.

Education & Experience

Completion of related post-secondary Sales/Construction education or a combination of education and experience will be considered.

Other Technical education considered an asset.

Minimum five (5) years technical sales experience with experience in the sector.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge in the construction industry. Some knowledge of geosynthetics material.
  • Work to achieve desired policy and program outcomes, including setting goals and priorities to maximize the use of resources available to consistently deliver results against objectives.
  • Focus on discovering those needs and the way to best meet them. Match customer requirements to existing products and services and/or designs, develops, and customizes additional products and services.
  • The ability to focus and persevere on tasks that require input from external sources.
  • Take personal responsibility for continuously raising the standard of customer service.
  • Exceptional oral communication and presentation skills.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Sales experience in the construction industry with a proven track record of success driving sales.
  • High degree of competence in written and oral communication.
  • Willingness and ability to travel (50%).
  • Proven problem-solving abilities associated with technical issues.
  • Driven, self-starter with superb interpersonal skills.
  • Independent but able to work well within a team environment.
  • Intermediate Microsoft Office Suite skills.
