Position Overview:

The Project Manager is responsible for the timely, safe, cost effective execution of projects. 
This position participates in staff meetings, establishes project scheduling, monitors performance to established budgets, and communicates with contractors and vendors. Responsible for job site safety, scheduling, quality, Human Resources as applicable, training, planning/reporting, and cost containment procedures.

Reporting into the Sr.Project Manager, this position will be based out of our Calgary, AB office. 


Key Responsibilities:
  • Primary contact for the customer/client after project award and client/customer maintenance.
  • Procures materials and prepares purchase orders in cooperation with the Estimating Group and Supply Chain Manager or their designated representative.
  • Monitors project budgets in consultation with the Estimating.
  • Evaluates and selects sub-contractors; prepares and executes the necessary subcontract or purchase order documents as required.
  • Studies bid documents and contract documents for each project and ensures complete understanding of project risks, obligations and entitlements; develops risk mitigation procedures and responses.
  • Prepares and coordinates project submittals and close-out packages for every project under their control.
  • Prepares and monitors project schedules.
  • Attends pre-construction and site meetings as required.
  • Collaborates with the Construction Manager and Operations Manager to select the appropriate Site Supervisor; determines crew requirements and availability, and develops a construction/execution plan for each project.
  • Communicates and works directly with the Site Supervisor to ensure that the project requirements and needs are being met.
  • Ensures that the project is adequately resourced during the life of the project.
  • Ensures that all field documentation is completed and submitted on time in a neat and orderly fashion. 
  • Verifies that the Site Supervisor and project crew understands the scope of work, contractual obligations and project parameters. Specifications are to be covered during the pre-job safety and scope review meetings and throughout the project.
  • Provides estimating assistance as required. 
  • Attends pre-tender meetings and performs pre-tender site visits.
  • Participates in bid reviews when requested.
  • Completes extra work estimates for assigned projects, in consultation with the Estimators.
  • Understands and is able to apply Layfield’s Health and Safety Program; continuously promotes Layfield safety culture.
  • Maintains certification for Leadership for Safety Excellence course or equivalent ACSA approved course.
  • Maintains H2S Alive, Standard First Aid, and CST-09 certifications.
  • Understands and maintains compliance with Layfield’s Transportation Compliance.
  • Ensures that Site Supervisors are completing and submitting the required safety documentation.
  • Ensures the accurate completion and submission of Incident Investigations and reviews all completed investigations with the assistance of the Environmental Health & Safety Manager.
  • Makes recommendations for improvements to the Safety Program.
  • Assists in all investigations involving serious injuries or fatalities on their respective project sites. 
  • Performs regular site inspections and documents as required.
  • Maintains site submitted safety records.
  • Understands the Workers Compensation Board account for Layfield Construction as it relates to claims management.
  • Provides budgets to Accounting for all assigned projects.
  • Provides sales and marketing support when required.
  • Assists Operations Manager in field personnel performance reviews, particularly Site Supervisors, with reference to assigned projects.
  • Provides design and engineering assistance to clients, engineers and consultants as required.
Required Skills & Knowledge:
  • Proven problem solving abilities
  • Driven self-starter with excellent interpersonal skills
  • Independent but able to work well within a team environment
  • High degree of competence in written and oral communication
  • Intermediate Microsoft Office program skills
Education & Experience:
  • 10 years’ experience in construction related disciplines. 5 years of which are central to project management.
  •  Completed BSc Degree, Civil Engineering Technology Degree, Project Management Professional, or Certified Engineering Technologist are all definite assets.
  • Active affiliations: ASET, APEGA, PMP
  • Other requirements: Leadership for Safety Excellence, Principles of Health & Safety Management in addition to Project Specific Safety Certifications required to gain access to project sites (CSTS, H2S Alive, Standard First Aid)
