Landfills for Solids and Waste


Landfills are one of the most common uses for geomembranes. The most common landfill is the municipal landfill, which uses multiple layers of geosynthetics in the base and additional geosynthetics in the cap. These geosynthetics keep the waste dry to prevent the formation of, and to contain any leachate that could harm the environment — some of the challenges with landfill design is managing these aggressive leachates that are formed. Layfield specializes in the manufacture of geomembranes that are designed to withstand these hazardous chemicals under elevated temperatures.

During the operation of a landfill, geosynthetics have several other uses. These include daily landfill covers that are placed on top of the working face of the landfill at the end of each day and interim covers, which are used to cover closed sections of the landfill until a final cap can be constructed. Additional geosynthetics such as leachate pond liners, landfill cap materials, erosion control products, and most other geosynthetics materials are available from Layfield.


Layfield also provides geomembrane containment systems for many hazardous waste applications, including the containment of liquid or solid hazardous wastes. Solid hazardous landfills contain non-liquid hazardous waste where the waste is deposited for final disposal and then covered. In hazardous waste applications, a double-lined system is often required to provide leak detection. Layfield can assist with the design of multiple lined systems, including the geomembrane layers, the drainage systems, and the connections to piping and structures. The Resource Conservation and Recovery Act has regulations establishing design and operating requirements for hazardous waste management units (Landfill). The requirements are intended to protect human health and the environment from the risks posed by hazardous waste.
