Position Description

Layfield is looking to add an experienced Senior Estimator to our Edmonton Office. The Senior Estimator plays a critical role in developing accurate, competitive, and comprehensive cost estimates for geosynthetics construction projects. This position requires deep technical knowledge, strong analytical skills, and the ability to collaborate effectively with clients, engineers, contractors, and internal project teams. The Senior Estimator supports both pre‑construction and project execution phases, ensuring estimates align with project specifications, company standards, and client expectations.

Key Responsibilities:

Estimating & Pre-Construction

  • Review project drawings, specifications, and project documents to prepare detailed material take‑offs for geosynthetics systems.
  • Analyze project requirements and develop accurate cost estimates for materials, labour, equipment, subcontractors, and indirect costs.
  • Understanding of various geosynthetics materials and ability to differentiate and discuss specifications and applications.
  • Apply appropriate bulking factors, installation methods, and production rates based on site conditions and industry best practices.
  • Develop construction details, sketches, and clarifications to support estimate accuracy and client understanding.
  • Conducts regular communication with clients, engineers, and contractors to clarify scope, technical requirements, and bid expectations.
  • Prepare comprehensive quotation packages including scope of work, inclusions/exclusions, assumptions, and terms and conditions.
  • Lead internal bid review meetings and present project scope, risks, and pricing strategy to management.
  • Has the ability to support the Estimating Manager in delegation of workloads, client communications/meetings, and reviewing project bids with other estimators/project managers

Project Coordination & Support

  • Assist with contract award processes, including purchase orders, subcontracts, and project setup.
  • Facilitate project handoff meetings to transition estimates to Operations, ensuring clarity on scope, materials, and installation strategy.
  • Support preparation of shop drawings, panel layouts, schedules, and general submittals.
  • Collaborate with Project Managers on procurement planning, cost tracking, and budget adherence.
  • Conduct regular follow up client communication regarding bid pricing, Q&A troubleshooting, and submitting further information/documents.
  • Participate in site visits for bidding, scope verification, troubleshooting, and project closeout.
  • Prepare or support post‑construction documentation, including QA/QC records, warranties, as‑builts, and completion reports.
  • Can provide mentorship and technical guidance to other estimators or operations team members
  • Ability to take on a significant amount of the role & responsibilities of the Estimating Manager in times of absence.

Required Skills & Knowledge

  • Strong understanding of geosynthetics materials, installation methods, and construction practices.
  • Ability to manage multiple bids simultaneously and meet tight deadlines with limited supervision.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, both internally and externally. Focus on customer satisfaction, quality, and safe harmonious project results.
  • Strong problem‑solving abilities in reading and interpreting engineering drawings and technical specifications.
  • Ability to learn and adapt from bids/projects and utilize information into future bids.
  • Proficiency with estimating software, MS Office, and AutoCAD tools.

Education & Experience

  • Engineering Technology Diploma (Civil or Construction) or higher.
  • Additional training in estimating, project management, or construction materials is considered an asset.
  • Minimum 7 years of estimating experience in construction, civil works, or geosynthetics.
  • 10 years of experience preferred, with demonstrated expertise in material take‑offs, cost analysis, and tender preparation.
  • Experience in geosynthetics installation, earthworks, environmental containment, or related construction sectors is highly desirable.
