HEATGARDTM HDPE - A revolutionary new High Temperature Resistant Geomembrane, designed for hot liquid containment applications.

Layfield Environmental Containment, a leader in geomembranes and environmental containment solutions is proud to announce the launch of our HEATGARDTM HDPE geomembrane material. HEATGARDTM HDPE is a new high temperature resistant thermoplastic polyethylene geomembrane that can withstand temperatures up to 100°C (212°F), depending on the type and nature of the application and the desired service life.
Standard HDPE geomembranes are typically recommended for continuous operating temperatures of no more than 60°C (140°F). Independent studies have shown that typical HDPE geomembranes exposed to 80°C (176°F) suffer complete antioxidant depletion in as little as three years. The new HEATGARDTM HDPE geomembrane has completed over two years of testing, showing that antioxidant depletion at 80°C (176°F) will exceed 20 years.
There has been a lot of interest in higher temperature geomembranes in the past few years. One area of particular interest has been the containment of high temperature liquids in the hydraulic fracturing industry. Other applications that require a high temperature resistant geomembrane include long-term brine containment, industrial waste water and process water containment, power generation and geothermal systems applications, bioreactor landfills, bio-solids management and a variety of oil and gas and mining process water applications.
Layfield’s HEATGARDTM HDPE is the subject of a major research project now entering the third year of development. There are a number of geomembranes with claims of high temperature resistance that are using pipe test methods to support their claims. In our research, we have shown that these pipe test methods are not equivalent to long-term geomembrane exposure testing. Long-term exposure testing for oven aging, brine and chlorine resistance provide a better indication of the actual long-term performance at high temperatures and the new HEATGARDTM HDPE has shown substantially better performance than other geomembranes on these tests. Using multiple temperatures and Arrhenius modeling we have developed a model that will allow us to predict the service life of HEATGARDTM HDPE at various temperatures.
The new HEATGARDTM HDPE geomembrane has a higher density than traditional HDPE materials and therefore has improved chemical resistance and strength properties. Manufactured by Layfield in North America, HEATGARDTM is available in 60 and 80 mil thicknesses.
