PROJECT SUMMARY
The client required an efficient dewatering solution to facilitate a culvert replacement near Avonlea, Saskatchewan. The project site presented typical challenges associated with shallow surface water, where maintaining a dry work area is critical to safe, effective construction. With sustainability and cost-efficiency in mind, the customer sought a reusable alternative to traditional dewatering methods.
Layfield was engaged through a local representative to recommend a practical solution that could be rapidly deployed in the field while minimizing environmental disruption and setup time. The goal was to enable uninterrupted construction activities without the complexity of permanent or resource-intensive systems.
SOLUTION
Layfield recommended and supplied a 50′ Aquadam® Cofferdam designed for use in water depths up to 1′. AquaDam® is a water-filled, reusable system that can be installed directly into standing or moving water with minimal site preparation. Once positioned and filled, it creates an effective barrier that stops water flow and isolates the work area, allowing crews to operate in dry conditions.
This approach eliminated the need for conventional methods such as sandbagging, sheet piling, or pump-intensive systems. Additionally, AquaDam’s reusable design ensures long-term value, as it can be drained, cleaned, and stored for future projects. The simplicity of installation and removal made it especially well-suited for a project with limited time and resources
CHALLENGES & RESULTS
The primary challenge was to quickly and effectively dewater a localized section of the site without introducing high cost, complexity, or environmental impact. Traditional approaches would have required more labor, materials, and longer setup times, potentially delaying the culvert replacement.
AquaDam® Cofferdam provided a straightforward, field-deployable solution that allowed the client to establish a dry workspace efficiently. Its lightweight, portable design made it easy to transport and install, even in a remote location. The system successfully prevented water infiltration throughout construction, enabling the project to proceed on schedule.
Overall, the solution delivered a reliable and cost-effective alternative to conventional cofferdams, with the added advantage of reusability for future dewatering applications. Larger AquaDam® Cofferdam systems are also available for projects requiring higher capacity or greater water control.
