Leo Gutierrez

Senior Estimator & Project Coordinator, Vaughan
14 Years with Layfield

Q: What is your role at the company, and how long have you been with us?
I am currently a Senior Estimator/Project Coordinator with the Estimating Department. I have been with Layfield since 2011 and will be entering my 14th year next year. My main functions are to respond to estimating requests and provide quotations/pricing for geosynthetics construction projects. I also handle technical inquiries from the Sales Department. Additionally, I prepare conceptual designs for special projects using techniques such as 3D modeling and coordinate with the team to transfer information developed during the estimating stage for project execution.

Q: What inspired you to pursue a career in your current field?
When I joined Layfield, I saw the vast opportunity in the unexplored field of Civil Engineering, particularly as it relates to environmental preservation and protection, among other applications. I was particularly drawn to Geosynthetics applications as they broadened my insight into how the environment can be protected using these products.

Q: What challenges have you faced in your role, and how did you overcome them?
Challenges are a part of everyday life, and it’s important how you receive and deal with them. While at Layfield, one challenge was becoming familiar with the multitude of products Layfield produces, promotes, and develops. Fortunately, my engineering background and diverse field exposure in construction applications made it easier to address these challenges. My colleagues at Layfield played a significant role in making it easier to navigate these challenges, as everyone is always willing to lend a helping hand.

Q: Is there a quote or motto that inspires you in your work or life?
“Aim high and hit the mark, do it slowly and surely. But most of all, cherish the ‘Love of Family.'”

Q: Outside of work, what are some of your hobbies or interests?
Outside of work, I enjoy cooking for my family and friends. There’s something enjoyable about serving a home-cooked, hot meal to loved ones. As an immigrant in a completely different culture, we sometimes miss the foods we had back home. Fortunately, almost everything is available in the diverse Canadian environment to cater to everyone’s cooking habits and palates. Additionally, I love watching movies.
