Enviro Liner® 6000 and HDPE, a Question of Flexibility

We are committed to developing flexible membrane liners which meet the challenging containment needs of our clients. For the past two years the formulation of Enviro Liner® 6000HD series has been under development, resulting in one of the most versatile and durable geomembranes currently available in the marketplace.

Enviro Liner® 6000HD series is composed of a proprietary polyolefin polymer, fully protected against UV degradation and oxidation with a technically advanced stabilization package. Unlike typical black commodity plastics, which are stabilized against the effects of UV light with carbon black alone, Enviro Liner® 6000 contains a technically advanced Light Stabilizer specifically designed to provide long term performance in a geomembrane as thin as 30 mils. Enviro Liner® 6000HD series geomembranes contain antioxidant additives sufficient to achieve a High Pressure OIT level of more than 2000 minutes, the highest OIT performance available in the industry. Our durable Enviro Liner® formulation is routinely available in white or black colors,  with other colors in development.

Our UV light and antioxidant stabilizing package has been tested in our accelerated weathering equipment for more than two and a half years, under aggressive conditions that replicate more than 20 years of natural weather exposure. The performance of our additive package has proven to be excellent. We have completed testing which has demonstrated that Enviro Liner® 6000HD at 30 mil has an exposed service life equivalent to 60 mil HDPE. The black versions of Enviro Liner®6000 come with an optional extended weathering warranty of 20 years for applications where the liner will be left exposed. The white versions of Enviro Liner 6000 come with an optional warranty of 10 years

The key difference between HDPE and Enviro Liner® 6000 HD is flexibility. Both are made primarily of polyolefin polymers, but HDPE is crystalline in nature, with more than 60% of it’s structure made up of tightly packed crystals. Enviro Liner® 6000 is only 20% crystalline, and while it’s chemical make up is almost identical to HDPE this difference in crystallinity makes Enviro Liner® 6000 more flexible with better elongation at yield. The improved flexibility of Enviro Liner® 6000 makes it possible to fabricate large panels at the factory, seaming the liner roll stock more efficiently and under controlled factory conditions. HDPE is seamed from roll stock in the field because it is too stiff to fold and roll up in the factory without damaging the liner.

On moderately sized projects fabrication welding can provide an installation advantage. The number of field welds is minimized by the use of large prefabricated panels (up to 3800 m2 for Enviro Liner® 6000 20 mil). By minimizing field welding the installation is done more quickly, and is less prone to expensive weather delays and the poor seam quality that can result from moisture on the liner sheet. Prefabricated flexible liners such as Enviro Liner® 6000 are installed quickly and efficiently using proven welding and testing techniques.

Enviro Liner® 6000 has been tested with a variety of hydrocarbons, including fuels and oils, and has shown excellent chemical resistance. Enviro Liner® 6000 is commonly used for the secondary containment of products found upstream of the refinery in the Oil Industry. Enviro Liner® 6000  is used for soil remediation in cases of heavy hydrocarbon contamination, where free liquid hydrocarbons are present on the liner. Enviro Liner® 6000 is well suited for use in the secondary containment of a variety of chemicals, and for primary containment of water and water based effluents. No matter the application, Enviro Liner® 6000 will provide effective containment for the long term. Giving you peace of mind that your critical environmental containment needs are fully satisfied.

Finally, the low level of crystallinity found in Enviro Liner® 6000  has another tangible benefit in a project where the liner will be exposed to chemicals. Highly crystalline materials such as HDPE are prone to environmental stress cracking, a phenomenon that occurs when HDPE is exposed to tensile stress (as with thermal contraction during cold periods) and certain chemical agents. Environmental stress cracking is cited as the cause of several HDPE containment failures each year and continues to be an elusive and devastating problem for HDPE manufacturers. With its much lower level of crystallinity, Enviro Liner® 6000 is unaffected by environmental stress cracking.
