Flowback/Formation Water and Brine Containment

Development of most oil and gas wells today includes fracturing (fracking) the resource-bearing formation with water, sand and other agents injected at extremely high pressures. When the pressure is released, flowback water returns to the surface. Additional formation water may also come to the surface during well operations. Flowback and formation waters are generally hot when they reach the surface and may contain corrosive chemicals and brine from deep within the earth. This water must be captured and securely stored at the well pad until it can be treated or properly disposed. Flowback and formation water at well sites has traditionally been stored in geomembrane lined pits or aboveground tanks. Tank storage is generally preferred because tanks are more easily inspected for leaks and can be fitted with leak detection and/or secondary containment liners.

Layfield Environmental Containment manufactures and fabricates high performance geomembranes capable of containing flowback and formation water without degradation. For primary and secondary containment in this application, we recommend Enviro Liner® 6000HD in either a 30 or 40 mil thickness. EL6000HD is a high performance fortified polyolefin alloy geomembrane designed for high-cost of failure, chemically aggressive applications. The product has proven to be exceptionally resistant to degradation in hydrocarbon, chemical, hot brine and UV exposed applications. Further, it has excellent flexibility and fatigue properties.
