Frac Water Containment
Newly developed horizontal drilling methods for extracting oil and gas require large volumes of water to fracture (frac) the surrounding rock formation. This water must be stored on or near the well pad during well completion operations. Water at well sites has traditionally been stored using in-ground ponds. However, large volume, aboveground frac tanks are rapidly replacing ponds in this application. Frac tanks are mobile and reusable, leading to reduced life cycle costs over pits. In addition, tanks can be constructed more rapidly, are safer to humans and wildlife and leave little permanent scarring on the land. Floating covers are also increasingly being used to prevent evaporation of important surface water and fluids used in the fracking process.
Layfield manufactures, fabricates, and installs high-performance geomembranes commonly used for lining both frac water ponds and tanks. For pond applications, we recommend Enviro Liner® 1000 or our textured Enviro Liner® 1100 in 20, 30 or 40 mil thicknesses.
We can supply both EL1000 in large prefabricated panels to significantly reduce the amount of field seaming and your overall construction costs. For above-ground storage tank lining, we recommend our Enviro Liner® 1000 in 30 or 40 mil thicknesses. This product has good chemical and UV resistance as well as excellent flexibility to resist bridging, tearing and puncture commonly associated with reinforced materials. Enviro Liner® 1000 is an excellent choice for prefabricate geomembranes in mid to long term applications.
