Soil Consolidation

Soil consolidation is a requirement for stable structures in Civil engineering. Achieving soil consolidation requires drainage and time. There are a couple of ways to speed soil consolidation; prefabricated vertical drains and preloads.

Layfield installs prefabricated vertical drains (wick drains) to help speed consolidation of base soils. Wick drains are pressed into soft soils to add drainage to the soil mass so that consolidation occurs quickly. Depending on available time the consolidation of soils under bridge abutments and embankments can be accelerated to meet project requirements. Preloads are another method used to consolidate soft soils. Layfield provides geogrids and other reinforcement materials so that preloads can be built higher and with steeper slopes.
